Letter from the Editors
Dear Reader,
We are pleased to present you with the second-ever issue of the Hopkins History Journal. The following edition is the result of months of tireless work on behalf of our editorial team and authors to publish this outstanding scholarship and continue a new Hopkins publication.
This issue of the History Journal encapsulates the discipline’s humanity. Historical events aren’t just stories–they’re the aspirations, setbacks, and journeys of people from different eras. Our classmates’ papers capture this interpersonal component, not just in their subjects but also in their authors. These papers are a window into our peers’ passions. By publishing their work, we hope to elevate students’ dedication and give these authors a platform to share their individuality in our school’s community.
Featured in this issue are seven excellent high school research papers, written by students in grades nine through twelve across four different courses. These pages hold months of research, including dozens of primary sources, that provide unadulterated historical accounts to enrich our own perspectives. The authors’ skillful analyses provide nuanced and sophisticated argumentation, deepening understanding of each detail’s significance. As the diversity of opinions in these papers shows, however, every historical issue is multifaceted. We ask you to consider, do you agree with the authors? With what other perspectives might you approach the same subject?
We hope this journal can act both as a resource and inspiration for your future work. Submissions are open for our next issue, and you can find more information about submitting your paper on the last page of the journal.
We’d like to especially thank our faculty advisor, Mr. Levy, for his support in making this possible. Once again, thank you so much to everyone who helped bring this journal to life. Three years out from the Journal’s conception, we continue to be amazed by the quality of submissions and the unbelievable transformation of individual ideas into the anthology you’re now holding.
We hope you enjoy your reading!
Sincerely,
Claire Billings and Theo Friedman
