Submission Guidelines

We welcome works from current students or recent graduates from any high school, on any historically relevant topic. Those who wish to submit work for next year’s journal must fill out the submission form.

All pieces must meet the following guidelines:

  • Papers must have been written for a high school class or as part of a supervised independent study in high school. Recent graduates may submit work written prior to graduation. Papers that have been graded must have received at least the equivalent of an A-

  • Students must fix all typos and minor corrections they receive from their teacher in the grading process, and may but are not required to address other comments and make minor changes before submitting.

  • Submissions cannot have been previously submitted to the Journal or previously published elsewhere.

  • Submissions must be between seven and thirty (7-30) double-spaced pages.

  • Submitted files must include no name or other identifying details.

  • Limit of one submission per student per semester.

Each submission is reviewed by an “Initial Review” committee of Hopkins students. The essays with the best initial reviews are considered by a smaller “Final Review” committee of junior and senior year students, which ultimately determines the essays to be published. Papers remain anonymous throughout the process. Qualified papers from institutions other than Hopkins may be featured on the website, but Hopkins papers have general priority for the printed edition.

If you are a Hopkins student and wish to apply to join our review committee, please indicate your interest here
